Notion MCP Integration with Claude AI for Workspace Search

Query and update your Notion workspace with AI. Claude searches pages, fetches content, and updates databases through a single conversation — using Notion's officially hosted MCP server.

A 90-second overview of the Notion MCP integration — what it is, what Claude can do with your workspace, how to set it up, and who benefits most.

Key Takeaways

What Notion MCP Actually Is (Plain English Version)

Notion MCP is Notion's officially hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. It gives AI assistants like Claude a standard way to read and write data in your Notion workspace — pages, databases, comments, users — without anyone writing a custom integration. You connect once via OAuth, and from then on Claude can search, fetch, and update content in Notion as if you were doing it yourself.

Before MCP existed, connecting an AI model to Notion meant building your own integration: provisioning an internal integration token, writing wrappers around Notion's REST API, maintaining those wrappers when Notion shipped new API versions. Notion MCP removes all of that. The server lives at https://mcp.notion.com/mcp, and Notion maintains it. Your AI tool connects, authorizes your workspace, and the tools are automatically available.

Notion designed their MCP server specifically for AI agents — not as a thin wrapper over their REST API. Content is returned as Notion-flavored Markdown, which consumes fewer tokens than the raw JSON block hierarchy the legacy API returns. Tool descriptions are written for agentic workflows, not for deterministic backend integrations. The effect is that Claude can work with real Notion content efficiently, even across large workspaces.

Why Claude Specifically?

Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant, and it's the primary model built to work natively with MCP. Claude Desktop has Notion MCP support as a first-class connector — you add it through Settings, complete OAuth, and it just works. Claude can chain multiple Notion tool calls in one conversation: searching for relevant pages, fetching their content, and drafting an updated summary, without losing context between steps.

How the Notion MCP Connection Works

The Notion MCP integration works over a remote streamable-HTTP transport. Your MCP client — Claude Desktop, Cursor, ChatGPT, or any other compatible tool — connects to https://mcp.notion.com/mcp, completes a browser-based OAuth flow, and stores the resulting access token. From then on, the client uses that token to call tools on Notion's MCP server, which translates the calls into actions against Notion's internal API and returns results in Notion-flavored Markdown.

Here's the flow in plain terms: you ask Claude "find the latest version of our onboarding doc and update the intro paragraph." Claude calls notion-search to find the doc, calls notion-fetch to read its current content, and calls notion-update-page to apply your edit. Each tool call respects your Notion permissions — Claude can only see and modify what you personally have access to in the workspace.

What Claude Can Actually Do With Your Notion Workspace

Notion MCP exposes 14 tools. The most important ones for typical workflows:

Tool NameWhat It DoesExample Claude Prompt
notion-searchSearch pages and data sources across your workspace (and connected tools like Slack, Drive, Jira if you have Notion AI)"Find our Q3 planning pages"
notion-fetchRetrieves the full content of a specific page, database, or data source by URL or ID"Open the engineering roadmap and show me what's in it"
notion-create-pagesCreates one or more pages with specified properties and content, optionally from a database template"Create a new bug ticket in the Bugs database titled 'Login timeout on mobile'"
notion-update-pageUpdates properties or content on an existing page"Mark the design review task as Done"
notion-create-databaseCreates a new database with custom properties"Create a Q2 OKRs database with Owner, Status, and Due Date columns"
notion-create-commentAdds a comment to a page or block"Add a comment on the launch plan asking Maria to review it"

Setting Up Notion MCP

Connecting Notion MCP to Claude takes about two minutes. You don't need a developer account, you don't need to run a server, and you don't need an API key. The setup happens entirely through Claude Desktop's connector settings and Notion's OAuth flow.

Step 1 — Install Notion MCP in Your Client

In Claude Desktop, go to Settings → Connectors and add the Notion connector. In Cursor, edit your ~/.cursor/mcp.json and add:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "notion": {
      "url": "https://mcp.notion.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Any MCP-compatible client follows the same pattern — just point it at https://mcp.notion.com/mcp.

Step 2 — Complete the OAuth Flow

The first time you use a Notion tool, your client opens a browser window asking you to authorize access to your workspace. You choose which pages and databases the connection can see. Notion stores the resulting access token and sends it with every subsequent request — you never see or handle the token directly.

Step 3 — Review Your Permissions

Notion's permission model is explicit: the MCP connection can only access pages you've shared with it. If you authorize the connection to your personal workspace, Claude can see everything you can see. If your team uses Enterprise Notion, your admin can restrict which AI tools are approved for MCP access at the workspace level.

Step 4 — Start Asking Claude About Your Notion Content

Start with simple queries — "what's on my current projects page" or "list all tasks assigned to me." If those return real results, the connection is working. Move to composite workflows next: "summarize last week's standup notes and create a blocker list in the Engineering database."

Real-World Use Cases

Knowledge Retrieval Without Tab-Switching

Knowledge workers routinely lose minutes searching for that one page someone mentioned in a meeting. With Notion MCP connected, Claude handles the search: "find the pricing update Maria shared last month" returns the page in seconds, with a summary Claude can elaborate on. No switching to the Notion tab, no typing into Notion's search box, no guessing which database the page lives in.

Meeting Notes to Action Items

After a meeting, a team lead can paste raw notes into their chat and ask Claude to "create a task for each action item in our Team Tasks database, assigned to the right owner." Claude parses the notes, calls notion-create-pages once per item, and populates the Owner and Status properties. What would be 15 minutes of copy-paste becomes a single prompt.

Cross-Workspace Research for Product Teams

Product managers pulling context for a spec often need to cross-reference several sources: customer feedback in one database, roadmap items in another, meeting transcripts in a third. With Notion AI enabled, notion-search surfaces results across Notion plus connected tools like Slack and Google Drive in one query — and Claude can synthesize the findings into a draft spec without the PM ever leaving the chat.

Documentation Maintenance for Engineering Teams

Engineering teams often have Notion documentation that drifts out of date. An engineer can ask Claude to "find all onboarding docs last updated before January and flag them for review" — Claude runs the search, filters by edit date, and creates review tickets. The same flow works for API docs, runbooks, or architecture decision records.

Security and Permissions

Notion MCP uses OAuth 2.0 — your workspace credentials never reach the MCP client directly. When you authorize a connection, Notion issues an access token scoped to your user and stores it against that connection. Every tool call is executed with your exact Notion permissions; Claude can't see pages you can't see, and can't modify content you don't have edit access to.

Enterprise admins have additional controls. Workspace owners on the Enterprise plan can restrict which AI tools are allowed to connect via MCP, maintain an approved-tools list, and audit active connections. Actions taken by an AI tool through MCP are logged as the user who authorized the connection, so page history and audit logs remain meaningful.

Why this tool has no live demo on mcpdemo.com Notion MCP requires per-user OAuth authentication and does not support bearer tokens. Every user must complete the OAuth flow with their own workspace — which makes a shared public demo page impossible without either exposing one person's real workspace to every visitor or silently simulating responses. Both would be dishonest. See our full explanation →
